Solar Symbol | Hand Painted Log Slice

Design

This pyrography plate by Paula Cruz Art is based on an image made by Bronze Age peoples of Scandinavia.

Also known as a sun cross or solar wheel, this symbol appears everywhere from the Neolithic to the Bronze and Iron Ages. It can be found in Nordic rock carvings as well as the continental Americas in the living artwork of native peoples.

This specific sunwheel replicates the ancient carving found at Madsebakke on Bornholm. It is unique due to the dotwork surrounding and within its structure. There is no doubt that ancient peoples of the world followed the trajectory of the sun with great interest, as it brought life and warmth into their lands. It was an incredibly important symbol, and remains so today.

Material & Make

Manipulation of natural materials is one of the most ancient forms of artistry. Pigments have been discovered on artefacts globally such as bone, wood, leather, and even stone.

This piece is uniquely one of a kind, having been hand worked by the artisan to compliment the dimension of the design and respect the natural grain of the wood.

In this piece, Paula has added paint to accent her design. The people of the ancient past would have decorated stone, wood, and textiles in bright colours as well.
