Design
The 2022 Nordic Animist Calendar is the creation of Rune Rasmussen, with artistic design by Ave Maria Nielson. It features artwork from Sean Parry of Sacred Knot Tattoo, Kai Uwe Faust of Kunsten Pa Kroppen and Heilung, and Jamie Massie of Northern Fire. As a manifestation of history and neo-Nordic artistry, this is a collaborative effort of many members of the community. The calendar also features an introduction, and each month features detailed information explaining the holidays and the history of the month itself.
The theme of this year’s Nordic Animist Calendar is “Ritual”.
Animism is a practice more than it is information. It is a doing more than it is a knowing. The traditional animist year and the turning of the seasons is a prime example of this. It is not so much specific pieces of static information that relates unambiguously to strictly prescribed ceremony. Rather, it is (and has always been) highly transformational human ways of participating and engaging the turning of the seasons in Northern Europe. This calendar represents a contemporary image of the creative, transformative and beautiful ways that Nordics perform ritual today. We try to show ritual in its widest sense, from tattooing, martial art, work out and performance over shamanic, folkloric and contemporary Heathen ritual to those the internet manifestations where Instagram aestheticism is the foundation through which the sharing of photography itself becomes an online ritual.
Rune Hjarnø Rasmussen explains further:
"The Nordic Animist Calendar is a wall calendar with a lot of information on Nordic seasonal animism through the ages. It is constructed on traditional runic reckoning combined with primstaf-marks that identify traditional Nordic holidays around the year. The calendar has a quite extensive text side and all the holidays are followed by explanations."
This is a truly unique piece of work, which we cannot recommend highly enough for anyone interested in Nordic history and ritual.
