These 3 prints from The Saxon Storyteller include depictions of different events in British history during the Iron age:
One of the most famous archaeological finds throughout the British Isles is undoubtedly the Sutton Hoo helmet found in East Anglia (one of the four main Anglo Saxon kingdoms). It is thought that the helmet belonged to Rædwald who was a king of this region in the early 7th Century.
Although popular culture often abbreviates the germanic settlers of this period as “Saxons", the kingdom itself is named after the Angles who were another tribe who predominantly populated the area. It is especially ironic as of the main tribes who settled, the Angles, Saxons and Jutes, it was the Angles whose name remains in the country of Angle-land, or England.
Whether you believe it was worn by Rædwald or not, it is hard not to see the helmet as one of the symbols of the Anglo Saxons.
- Snake Pit:
Many songs and stories have already been written about the demise of the Viking hero Ragnar Lothbrok. Legend has it that Ragnar finally met his death at the hands of the Northumbrian King Aelle in England after being cast into a snake pit.
Beyond Ragnar, this form of death is found in other Germanic and European tales including those of Dietrich Von Bern and Gunnarr of Burgundy. Perhaps there is a link between this and Wyrmsele, a type of Anglo Saxon hell...
- The Beserker on Stamford Bridge:
The battle of Stamford Bridge was where Harold Godwinson ended the ambitions of the giant Norse King, Harald Hardrada and this print by The Saxon Storyteller depicts one of the key moments that turned the battle in the favour of the English.
The forces were deployed either side of the river and the Anglo Saxon chronicle tells us that a single Norse warrior with a battle axe held back the entire English force on the bridge itself. On this narrow bridge, he killed many English fighters before he was finally slain by an English soldier who floated under the bridge in a half-barrel and thrust his spear through the planks of the bridge and into the Norseman.
