Eagle Of Iona | Organic T-Shirt

Design

This design is from Sacred Knot Tattoo was hand printed in the Northern Fire studio by Sean Parry himself. It features a beastly and frowning bird of prey, an eagle similar to ones found in The Book of Kells.

It can be said that this is a form of Insular Celtic art, which is an art history term that can be loosely defined as a style of art that has been blended together in a highly concentrated space. In this case, that refers to the British Isles during a time of Nordic and Saxon influence.

Within the Early Medieval times of Northern Europe, it often refers to the art created by monks within highly valuable manuscripts.

Key features of this style are knotwork, winding animals, and tangled individuals wound about vegetal tendrils.

The most famous examples of this style can be found in The Book of Kells and The Lindesfarne Gospels.

About The Artist

Sean Parry is the owner and lead artist of Sacred Knot Tattoo, as well as a founding member of the Northern Fire Art Collective. He specialises in Celtic and Nordic arts and lives and works from his hometown of Llandudno in North Wales. Sean’s projects incorporate knotwork, swirls, and beasts inspired and mirroring those found in the historical record - a reflection of his passion for archaeology and ancient iconography. Though he is well known for his mastery as a tattooist, his work with paint, leather, and precious metals are also part of his artistic endeavours.
