The Oseberg Cats | Organic Women's T-Shirt

Design

This design by Jannicke Wiese-Hansen of Nidhogg Tattoo features several of the most celebrated creatures from Viking Age art, the cats from the Oseberg ship burial.

Carved into one of the wooden carts included in the grave, these felines may offer a connection to the goddess Freyja due to her affinity for cats. Alongside many grave goods that accompanied the women on their journey into the next world, the cats are a favourite of many visitors to the Oslo Viking Ship Museum.

The objects of this burial range from tapestries to sculptures and even rattles. The ship itself, constructed of oak from the far west of Norway, was created 14 years prior to the burial. The ornamented sleds (including the one that features cats) are even older. This implies extreme wealth and power surrounding the two women. They had the influence the be buried with their choice of goods from across Scandinavia, and included these in their final resting place.

Material & Make

This women's cut t-shirt is made with ethically sourced 100% organic cotton and has been hand printed in house by Northern Fire artists at our workshop in Wales. Our inks are water based and locally sourced to minimise the negative impact of the textile industry on the environment.
