Design
This textured painting by Paula Cruz Art features one of the most pervasive and recognised symbols of history, the sun wheel.
Also known as a sun cross or solar wheel, this symbol appears everywhere from the Neolithic to the Bronze and Iron Ages. It can be found in Nordic rock carvings as well as the continental Americas in the living artwork of native peoples.
This specific sunwheel by Paula references the ancient carving found at Madsebakke on Bornholm. It is unique due to the dotwork surrounding and within its structure. There is no doubt that ancient peoples of the world followed the trajectory of the sun with great interest, as it brought life and warmth into their lands. It was an incredibly important symbol, and remains so today.
